Aloha and Welcome!

As a system under a single administration, HSPLS provides library users across the state with equal access to library materials, online information databases, and the Internet, via one automation system. Customers can borrow, reserve, and return library materials at any of the 51 libraries. Library materials are delivered among the libraries and islands via an intra-library loan Service.

Call the Hawaii State Library from anywhere in the state during library hours for timely answers to quick reference questions. Oahu 586-3621; Neighbor Islands 1-800-390-3611. Or call any public library.


Internet Access [ top ]

Free, limited access to the Internet is available at every library during library hours. Show your current, valid HSPLS library card and sign up for a 50 minute session per week.


Magazine Articles & Newspaper Index Online [ top ]

Find magazine articles and other online information at the library or from your home, office or school. A list of our databases, most of which can be accessed remotely is available at:

The Hawaii Newspaper Index can be found as part of our public access catalog (PAC) at:

Computer Programs & Other Reference Sources [ top ]

Provided at 30 public libraries through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Loaded with Microsoft office programs, these computers are available for free with your valid HSPLS library card. Call your library for more information and reserve an appointment.

Library Cards [ top ]

Your valid photo ID and proof of current local address are required to obtain a library card. (For non-resident and visitor cards, proof of permanent and temporary addresses are required). Notify us immediately if your card is lost, stolen, or if you have a change of address or phone number.

Minors (below 18) must have their applications co-signed by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must present a current ID and proof of mailing address. (For prearranged class visits needing library cards, ask staff for more information.) Parents or guardians are responsible for items, fines, and fees on their childrenís cards.

Hawaii residents and stationed military No charge
Hawaii resident minor replacement card - 17 years and under $5
Hawaii resident adult and military replacement card - 18 years and older $10
Non-resident (5 years) - $25 $25
Visitor card (3 months) $10

Access Your Library Card Account Online [ top ]

Go to Hawaii State Public Library System website at: www.librarieshawaii.org and click on 'Catalog' button (1) and then select 'Online Catalog' (2) from the pop-up menu that appears (illustrated below)

  • Search for books and other materials
  • Place reserves and see what items you have on hold
  • View what items you have checked out
  • Check your fines status

Renewals [ top ]

Library materials may be renewed once in person or over the phone if there are no hold requests for the item. Have your library card and library materials handy when you call. Oahu 586-3652. Neighbor islands 1-800-820-7368. Or call any public library
