MAKANA AKAMAI means "Gift of Knowledge".

Would you like to honor a friend or the memory of someone?

Donate a book in the subject area of your choice to the Library's permanent collection and receive an acknowledgement in the book given to the Library.  As described in a Garden Island News article, an original bookplate (see sample, to the right), designed by local artist Anne Palmer Schneider, will beautifully display your contribution to all future readers.

Forms (see sample far below) are available at the Library.

Below is an article about the Makana Akamai Project that was featured in the Garden Island newspaper:

Princeville library Revs Up Donation Program
by The Garden Island, February 22, 2008

The Princeville Public Library is seeking donations for its Makana Akamai program, which means “the gift of knowledge.”

In exchange for $25, participants can specify a particular book or a category or area of interest for their donation. Categories include art/music/recreation, business/science/technology, children, and Hawai'i/Pacific.

The library will purchase the specified book and have local artist Anne Palmer Schneider design a beautiful book plate honoring the donor and the person to whom the book was dedicated. Princeville resident Anne Palmer Schneider has been painting scenes of the Hawaiian landscape for more than 15 years. Her work has been viewed in museums, galleries and numerous juried shows.

To donate a book and honor someone special, visit www.hawaiian.net/northshorelibrary and click on “Makana Akamai Project,” or stop by the Princeville Public Library and request a Makana Akamai form (see sample below). For more information, call librarian Jennifer Relacion on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. or on Wednesdays between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. at 826-4310.
