Mission

Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville is the local affiliate of Friends of the Library of Hawaii, an active group of library users and advocates which for years has supported Hawaii’s public libraries through funding for programs, books and supplemental materials, equipment, and staff training. Our local affiliate of Friends of the Library of Hawaii supports the Princeville Public Library in its mission to offer excellent services to our residents and visitors. The group’s efforts began even before the opening of the library on April 14, 1999 and continue today in a variety of ways.

Goals

Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville supports the library through fundraising, such as the quarterly used book sales, Friends membership, and private donations.

Money raised through the Friends’ fundraising efforts results in additional books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs for checkout at the library. Additionally, Friends’ funding supports quality programming, library beautification, furnishings, and community events.

All interested persons in the community are warmly invited to participate in events and volunteers are always welcome at the library.

FUNDRAISING AND QUARTERLY BOOK SALE.

The Book Sales have been a great source of funding for the Friends, averaging more than $2,000 per sale.

Our sincerest thanks to all the volunteers who have helped prepare for and volunteer at the sales throughout the year, and those who donate their books for the sale.

Book sales are held on the FIRST Saturday of March, June, September (first Sat. after labor day), and December.

Be sure to check our Calendar or our Facebook page for the date of the next sale and any specials.

FRIENDS MEMBERSHIP.

Membership in the Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville is easy! Your membership – only $25 per year (“bronze” supporter) – directly supports the Princeville Public Library.  It allows you the opportunity to shop at the quarterly Book Sale an hour before the general public, so you can find the best selection. Dear Friends’ Members and Patrons of the Princeville Public Library,

2018 is going to be a banner year for the Friends.  We have a new, full-time, energetic and a creative branch manager, Ms. Katherine Bengston, a motivated Board of Directors, a fantastic duo, Steve Sobel and Diane Chait, running the Friends’ quarterly Used Book Sale and a technical support individual and Paul Brewer, who is responsible for the Friends’ Web site, Facebook account, and e-mail messages.

Thanks to our members and buyers of our used book collection, our 2018 budget is healthy.  This will enable us to support the branch manager as she revitalizes all of the services, programs and materials (books, magazines, cds, etal) our fine library has to offer to our community.  Check out Kat’s monthly calendar!

But, we cannot reach our 2018 goals and objectives without the help of the community.  So support your library, and submit your name as a volunteer.  Give us a few hours to shelve books, donate your books for the big Quarterly Book Sale, assist with weekly programs, such as the keiki Lego Club or Story Hour/Crafts, among others. Stop by the library and speak to the branch manager to volunteer.

Currently, our board consists of 9 members. Five of the members have been on the board for five years, plus.  We need new board members, new ideas, new ways of accomplishing our goals and out-of-the-box thinkers.  Become a supporter of your Library by volunteering to be on the Friend’s Board of Directors.  Want to learn more about the Friends 501-c-3 non-profit corporation and volunteer to be a board member?  Contact me at President@princevillelibrary.com.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at our speaker programs and used book sales.

Mahalo,

Laura McConnell
President, Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville
